Sony: Do gamers know they don't own digital PlayStation
Sony is facing a lawsuit for allegedly misleading consumers into thinking they own their digital games. With an all-digital future for PlayStation, this legal battle is heating up. The company must prove that customers understand the fine print. But how aware are gamers of their licenses vs ownership? Whether you're buying or renting, there's a lot to unpack here. Let's share some insights and discuss what you know or believe.
Gotta agree with OP here. But isn't this case like the Spotify vs. Apple case? I thought The Supreme Court decided you own digital purchases, but proof of ownership is a problem. And what would it mean to own a digital game anyway? You can't touch it.
So, I'm not a lawyer, but even I see the problem here. Sony's claim is that if you bought it, you should know better. Yet, they use a confusing licensing system that says you don't own anything, and put it in a document no one reads. They're basically trying to claim both licenses and ownership at the same time.
News to me. Really hope Sony can negotiate a new deal with us soon and we can play our digital games. Why should we have to buy them again just to play them on the same PS5 that we already own? This is ridiculous.
So they want to claim that because we click a button it's a binding agreement. That's doesn't seem to require knowledge of the fine print. No one reads that stuff unless they have to. And what about the time where the PSN was down for a week and no one could play their games? That's a big problem with not owning. I'd argue that the software is not at all DRM-free. Big companies cant have it both ways.
The solution to this is simple: give us DRM-free games and let us own them. Then everyone wins. You have to wonder why they don't just do this. Maybe they can't.
I agree, could have been more transparent. But what am I supposed to do, not buy digital games? Not like they give us a choice these days. If the next case comes down on the side of the consumer, Sony better be ready with some new agreements to sign, and I hope we see some changes soon. Please, no more of this big company BS.
When did everyone agree to buy not own? I thought buy means buy but apparently not for digital.
