Hawaii 'Gates of Hell' lava skylight at Kīlauea
Known as the 'Gates of Hell,' this eerie formation is actually a lava skylight at Kīlauea, where the roof of a lava tube collapsed and exposed the molten rock beneath. The twisted, hardened lava around the opening can look remarkably like a mass of tangled figures, creating one of Hawaii’s strangest natural sights. And despite how fascinating it looks, these formations can be extremely dangerous due to unstable lava roofs and intense heat. It’s amazing how nature can create something so terrifyingly beautiful. The lava fields in Iceland are stunning, but this takes it to a whole new level. Imagine the stories that could be told. I think this would be a perfect place for a horror movie. Do you think guides would allow you to get close to the danger zone?
I've seen some intense lava fields, but this one sounds like it's in a league of its own. The molten rock, the tangles of hardened lava — it's almost like a scene from a sci-fi film.
I don't think I would want to get that close to the Gates of Hell. I’ve seen lava fields before, but nothing like this. The dangerous part is definitely a concern, and the people controlling the access must be really careful. But it would be worth it to see it from a safe distance.
This place is like something out of a nightmare. The visuals are just terrifying. But that's the beauty of nature, isn't it? Have you ever seen anything like this before?
I was lucky enough to visit Kīlauea a few years ago. the place is both breathtaking and terrifying. The heat was intense, and you could really feel the power of the volcano. If you visit, definitely throw on a protective suit. I didn't.
The twisted, hardened lava looks like a sculpture from another world. I can just imagine the vibrations and roar of the molten lava beneath. Are there any other places like this on Earth?
It would blow my mind to see that in person. But it is extremely dangerous, so hopefully the access is very controlled and secure. Was it a controlled or wilderness area?
I can't imagine being anywhere near this. The Gates of Hell is fitting name. It's like a portal to some other dimension. Badass and creepy.
