First-time visitor to Rome: Must-see attractions and hidden gems?
I'm planning my first trip to Rome and I want to make the most of my time there. I've heard about the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Vatican City, but I'm also interested in finding some lesser-known spots. What are your recommendations for both must-see attractions and hidden gems? How can I avoid the tourist traps and still have an authentic experience? Also, any tips on navigating the city and local customs would be appreciated!
I disagree with the idea of avoiding tourist traps. Some tourist attractions are must-sees because they are genuinely wonderful. The Trevi Fountain is a must, I'm afraid. When you're there, just make sure to throw a coin over your shoulder and make a wish!
The Colosseum is amazing, but if you want to avoid the crowds, try going early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Also, consider getting a Roma Pass for free entry to some museums and discounts on others.
Don't miss out on the Pantheon and the Borghese Gallery! They are both incredible and often overlooked.
Don't forget to try some of the local cuisine. Cacio e Pepe is a must-try pasta dish! And for a unique experience, visit the Mercato di Campo de' Fiori for fresh produce and local delicacies.
Coffee in Rome is a religion. Find a local café and enjoy a real Italian espresso. Avoid the touristy places near major attractions— they’re usually overpriced and not authentic.
I would recommend the Catacombs of San Callisto. It's a bit outside the city center, but it's a fascinating piece of Roman history that most tourists miss.
